John Dilg Grooming the Trails

Are the Trails Open Yet?

Always check the Kenosha County hotline for latest at 262-671-4944.

Although there is no official policy or legal date, the Kenosha County Alliance of Snowmobile Clubs has established some guidelines (minimum requirements) for opening the trails.
They include:

  • 4″ of snow on frozen ground
  • 6″ of snow on unfrozen ground
  • Temperature below 34°F

Current trail status for Kenosha County is shown in the sidebar to the right under the heading “Trail Status.”

In Kenosha County — as it is in the entire state of Wisconsin — there is no official legal date or ordinance that decrees when the trails will open. (Some areas of the state state have defined snowmobiling seasons, or dates that specify when trails cannot open before or stay open after, but these are not necessarily the dates the trails will be open.)

It is up to the local county, clubs and other organizations as to when they are marked and ready. Then, they will open. Obviously, it differs in different parts of the state, depending on the local snow conditions and their clubs’ progress in completing trail marking and preparation.

The final decision as to whether open the Kenosha County trails is based on those factors for all 77 miles of trails in Kenosha County. The Kenosha County Alliance of Snowmobile Clubs has adopted an “all or nothing” policy. In other words, the whole Kenosha County trail system is either open or closed — no piecemeal effect. Also, the Alliance tries to coordinate with the sister counties, Racine and Walworth, as our trails interconnect with their trail systems.

As our trailmaster Arlyn often says, “I know it goes without saying, but please stay on the marked trails. Remember that trails are hard to get but easy to lose!!”

Ride safe and have a great season. For the most up-to-date information on trail conditions in Kenosha County, call the hotline at (262) 671-4944.
